GAS Series 3 #9 Blind Tom Wiggins

GAS is back with Series 3 of its iconic flagship series, featuring fascinating personalities and incredible events! 

Blind Tom Wiggins, born a slave in 1849, rose to international prominence as one of the greatest piano prodigies of the 19th Century and the most recognizable African-American musician of his time. Born blind, his extraordinary musical abilities manifested themselves early, producing his first composition at the age of 5. He could listen to a piece of music only once and be able to play it note for note, perfectly. 

His repertoire consisted of over 7000 pieces of music and he performed it all over the country and abroad for Royalty, Presidents and distinguished 19th Century personalities like Mark Twain. They all knew the remarkable Blind Tom Wiggins.

Tom spent his later years in Hoboken, NJ and legend has it his piano playing could be heard at all hours of the day and night. He passed away in 1908.
