GAS Series 3 #13 Enigmarelle Open Edition Card
GAS is back with Series 3 of its iconic flagship series, featuring fascinating personalities and incredible events!
The humanoid automaton has been a fascination of mankind for hundreds of years. The advent of the Industrial Age propelled many inventors to try his or her hand at creating their very own mechanical Frankenstein. In 1904, self-proclaimed inventor Frederick J. Ireland did it …sort of.
His creation, the horrific and wonderful Enigmarelle toured Vaudeville theaters in the early part of the last century. He/She/They were a slightly larger than lifesize mechanical humanoid automaton with a waxlike visage, that could walk, dance, smoke a cigarette, do calisthenics and most remarkably ride a bicycle! The only thing Enigmarelle could not do is talk. When audiences questioned the validity of the creation, Ireland would proudly show the whirring, cranking gears within.
What he did not show, was a legless acrobat named Alba Root, who fit snugly in the costume and worked the mechanics. It was decades later that a relative of Root found Enigmarelle’s mummy-like mask in the attic of his home in Los Angeles.
