GAS Series 3 #11 Assata Shakur Open Edition Card

GAS is back with Series 3 of its iconic flagship series, featuring fascinating personalities and incredible events!

Assata Olugbala Shakur (born “JoAnne Chesimard”) grew up in North Carolina and New York, the rambunctious granddaughter of two strict grandparents in the South and a rebellious daughter to a single mother in the North during a time of racial segregation.

She later became a member of the Black Liberation Army and was involved in several Black organizing groups, including the Black Panther Party.

In 1977, she was convicted in 1977 for the murder of a state trooper during a shootout in New Jersey.

In 1979, she escaped from prison and made her way to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum and continues to live today. More than forty years after her conviction, Shakur, now seventy-four, remains on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list.
